Eskharad

Eskharad (pronounced ESK-ah-rod) is an arctic region in the northeastern-most coast of Rykett. Its harsh landscape and large expanse make it an inhospitable place and it is generally left alone by other nations. The people who live here, live meagerly, trading with firbolgs and farming caribou.

Eskharadim heraldry is shared between the two family’s united in blood pact. White represents the winter home of the firbolgs. Brown reflects the woodland culture of the human Rauhan immigrants. The two crowns show the dual-kingship of these people.

History

Eskharad has remained stagnant economically and culturally for millennia; its people and its climate are steeped in tradition. Before Eskharad was named, trappers and hunters, who did not fit into the city climes of Rauha, ventured north to seek escape. The men and women were not persecuted, but they struggled to finds the means by which to survive. Many of the immigrants had used the land and traded with firbolgs that inhabited the area for centuries. Similarly, many of the firbolgs ventured south from the Godspine to seek a more peaceful and temperate life.

Eskharad was declared a nation to unite the firbolgs and humans against invaders from Madkroken and the pirates seeking isolated refuge off of the Sea of Ilane. Eskharad was an ideal hideout after coastal raids on Rauha; pirates knew Rauhan military would not pursue them in ice-jammed waters. As a bonus to the pirates, villages in the north were easily plundered and invaded. As part of this agreement, the firbolgs defended human settlements for medicine and goods.

In 72 IR, human, Lars Kilcairn, and firbolg, Durth of Verhoon formed a blood pact, which has since spanned generations, sealing this relationship and declaring Eskharad a sovereign nation. Furthermore, the two, representing their peoples, agreed to transfer hands of leadership from generation to generation bewteen firbolg and human alike. As both peoples cherish peace, this union has lasted and been honored for centuries since.

The only major conflict of Eskharad’s history started in 841 IR when a former Madkroken warlord named Hrogen the Red sought revenge against his people. The conflict was called the War of Whispers because after crossing into Eskharad and eking out a meager existence, Hrogen decided that this was not the life he had intended to live. He began to spread rumors of war and killed his neighbors in secret, naming Madkroken raiders as the culprits. His village was worked up into such a fervor that they crossed into Madkroken on a vicious killing spree.

They met some success, but after what the locals deemed “fair revenge”, Hrogen still needed to work out the final dealings of his plan, but the seeds of dissent were already sown. Returning with his band back into Eskharad, he was pursued by Madkroken barbarians. War was informally declared and the firbolg king, Griss of Verhoon organized his forces to stage another coup. Things were working out better than Hrogen had planned, but what he hadn’t counted on was the negotiations between Madkroken lords and the king of Eskharad. When it was figured that no wrongdoing had been committed by either side, Hrogen was sought out and put to death as restitution for both sides.

Government

Overseeing the capitol of Stehag is its current king, Jharl of Verhoon. To maintain an even keel of rulership and as per terms of the blood pact signed in 72 IR, the ancestor of Lars Kilcairn, Magnar Kilcairn, fills the role of adviser to the king.

Lordships are established throughout the country as even the most populace towns are few and far between. These lords are more closely described as thanes or farm-lords. They number evenly among firbolg and human alike. Their military is a common militia, but everyone is required to serve— man and woman alike.

Outsiders are generally not welcome; however, villages far from Stehag are more likely to hire mercenaries and adventurers to deal with difficult conflicts.

Navy and Seafaring

Eskharad maintains a small navy to combat pirates that are still present. The navy is run by human shipbuilders and commanders, although the Kingsship is large enough for its firbolg king if he should need to take to water.

Outlying Areas and Territories

  • The Great Moor: Although this is technically still part of the Eskharad kingdom, it is not a populace area by any means. The area is known to be inhabited by hags among other comp, damp-dwelling creatures. Along the coast are ships of pirates who ventured too far north. Local legend describes a beautiful woman called the Winter Siren who lives and breathes with the moor and she is very protective of it and its hidden treasures. These stories bring out many wayward adventurers, but few are ever seen again.
